Childlike Faith & The Super Bowl

Childlike Faith and The Superbowl
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. - Psalm 139:23 - 24

Ten years ago I had the unique opportunity to go the Superbowl.  Antwann Randle El was then the starting WR and punt returner for the Pittsburgh Steelers.  He was the quarterback when I was coaching at Indiana University.  On the plane ride back home, I had time to reflect on the experience....

I had seats on the lower level, I saw the Rolling Stones at half time (and waved my flashlight), I saw God heal Twann's back after a serious collision, I saw Twann throw a touchdown pass off the reverse as the Steelers beat the Seahawks, I was invited to the VIP Pittsburgh Steeler Family Party at the Marriott (they had prime rib, ice sculptures everywhere, and great shrimp), I saw Kid Rock; Snoop Doogy Diz Dog and I ate shrimp together, Hank Williams Jr. sat at the table with me, I saw the girls from the Playboy Mansion (they were clothed, slightly and tightly), but I heard the voice of God through a 4 year old, Ciara Randle El.

For 5 hours Ciara never left me.  She was on my hip, on my back, in my lap, or holding my hand.  She also saw Snoop Dog and Kid Rock, but she was not real interested in them.  No, she was more interested in playing with her "cousin" Josh.  While everyone was watching Snoop, or trying to get a look at the playboy girls, I was standing as if I were on a cross while Ciara searched me with the flash light they gave her at half-time (she wanted to pretend we were going through airport security).  Ciara couldn't tell enough people about me.  As she rode on my back, she asked me to take her around the room so that she could introduce me to her "friends" (she didn't know most of these people).  She must have introduced me to 100 people!

On the plane ride back I had to do some soul I love being in the presence of God as much as Ciara loved being with me?  Do I love Jesus so much that I don't lose focus on Him when the world is trying to tempt and distract me?  Ciara was not distracted by Kid Rock, she just wanted to be with me.  Do I love Jesus enough that I feel compelled to introduce Him to my "friends"?  Ciara loved me enough to introduce me to her friends.

In Luke 18: 16 - 17 the Bible says "Then Jesus called for the children and said to the disciples, "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I assure you, anyone who doesn't have their kind of faith will never get into the Kingdom of God."

Do you have childlike faith?  Ciara probably didn't know that when she asked me to stand like I was on a cross that God would use that little half-time flashlight she searched me with to search the deepest part of my heart.  Stand as if you were on a cross and let God's flashlight search over you today.

The more we know of God, the more unreservedly we will trust him; the greater our progress in theology, the simpler and more childlike will be our faith. - J. G. Machen
